Buildings and safety standards are constantly evolving, and property managers need to stay ahead of the game – or, at the very least, not fall behind. Lift modernisation isn’t just about upgrading old equipment; it’s often a necessity.
We see how ageing lift systems present a variety of challenges to residential blocks, commercial properties, and critical public infrastructure. From reduced performance and higher operating costs to energy inefficiency and compliance gaps, lift modernisation can tackle a variety of issues. Here at ILE, we are proud to offer a complete solution and a team who will work with you every step of the way.
What is lift modernisation?
Lift modernisation is the process of updating systems – whether it’s replacing obsolete equipment, refining components or enhancing safety and performance features – without the expense and disruption of a complete lift replacement.
“90% of the time, the guides and counterweight will remain in place during a lift modernisation,” explains Phil McDonnell, ILE’s Technical and Commercial Manager. “The main design is kept the same (making sure it adheres to the latest EN-20 safety regulations) and the parts around it are updated or upgraded. Our modernisation projects can include everything from new entrances, doors and controllers, to slings, machines and lift cars. Not many people know that we’re the only company in the UK that offers a full lift modernisation service. However big or small, we can do it all.”
Why is lift modernisation important?
Lift modernisation projects provide a whole range of benefits. Enhanced control systems and motors can improve reliability and minimise downtime, while the latest energy-efficient tech can reduce operating costs and your environmental footprint. In addition, modernisation helps to make sure you’re meeting up-to-date safety and accessibility standards.
“There are lots of advantages to modernising your lift system,” says Phil. “There are varying levels – you might only need a few components or you might need them all. As members of LEIA we have a duty to recommend what to change and what you need to do to adhere to safety guidance, so if you’re unsure about what needs updating you can always lean on us for expert advice. We’ll repair equipment of any age and continue to support products where we can to maximise sustainability efforts and keep costs down. This means we’ll always find a solution, even if something is obsolete.”
A modernisation service that works around you
Every lift modernisation project is different, so Phil explains there’s not a one-size-fits-all approach: “We’ll work with each of our customers to tailor our solution and make sure we’re delivering the best fit for them. We take a holistic approach to everything we do and offer general arrangement drawings as part of our process, making sure we’re always accountable for quality assurance purposes.”
While each project is different, Phil explains most lift modernisations share a similar process: “As soon as a customer informs us of the intention to modernise a lift, we’ll arrange an initial call with our team to find out more about what’s required. From there, we’ll have a pretty clear idea of what we need to do and what the estimated cost would be. We’ll then carry out a site visit and survey to assess the system in more detail before providing general arrangement drawings, manufacturing the equipment, and supplying it.”
Partnership in practice
One excellent example of a successful modernisation project is the recent, large-scale project ILE carried out in partnership with Target Lifts for London residential block The Bridge. Read the full case study here.
